Since the automotive industry was convinced of the great advantages of metal catalysts, numerous automobile manufacturers supported for decades all attempts to use steel foils as a carrier. Many engineers failed at the implementation. Only employees of the Siemens subsidiary Interatom, who were well versed in the joining of high-strength materials, finally had the desired success. This finally resulted in the founding of EMITEC Gesellschaft für Emissionstechnologie mbH.
