The Leibniz Institute for Spatial Social Research conducts problem-oriented basic research on the development, transformation and adaptability of spaces and thus the spatial dimension of social action in regional, national and international contexts. The cooperation in the five research departments of the IRS focuses on central research fields of spatial social research:
Dynamics of economic areas
Institutional change and regional common goods
Communication and knowledge dynamics in space
Regeneration of cities
Historical Research Center
and
Scientific collections on the construction and planning history of the GDR
Spatial social research at the IRS is based on the interdisciplinary expertise of around 40 scientists from the disciplines of economic and social geography, political science, sociology, planning science, history and the history of art and architecture.
As an extra-university research institute and member of the Leibniz Association , the IRS is scientifically independent. The basic funding will be provided through grants from the State of Brandenburg together with the Federal Government and the other Länder in accordance with the Implementation Agreement to the GWK Agreement on Joint Funding by the Federal Government and the Länder. The IRS carries out its statutory duties under private law in the legal form of a registered association.
