Austria’s first LED tunnel lighting from the Upper Palatinate
The company Broll Systemtechnik KG, previously known for technologically optimal solutions with the production of sheet metal products in the fields of medicine, communication, traffic, automatic and high-performance printing technology, made it with innovation and core competence in the field of electrical engineering to the well-known manufacturer from the Upper Palatinate for tunnel lights advance.
In 1989 the company Broll Metalltechnik was founded by the managing owner Peter Broll
and renamed Broll Systemtechnik KG in 2007.
From the beginning, various sheet metal products were used, but prioritized designs for special industrial luminaires.
A sample system with paint control lights for the BMW plant Regensburg also brought the entry into the automotive industry – and now not only for the European area.
In 2001, the first project with tunnel lights for the Petuelring in Munich was realized – at that time still a relatively uncomplicated version of fluorescent lamps compared to today’s technical and qualitative requirements, which however still exists today.
But that changed soon. Tunnel luminaires with high lighting and qualitative specifications for metal halide lamps and high-pressure sodium vapor lamps were added to the production program.
The preliminary final innovation then concerned the LED tunnel lights.
Optimal knowledge for a total of sophisticated housing and electrical engineering were necessary for the use of high-power LEDs. Design and homogeneous light had to be right. The result was an LED luminaire with a modular structure consisting of a stainless steel housing, subracks for the control electronics and several attachable luminaire units. An important factor was the thermal management. The operation of an LED light requires a cooling of the high-performance light-emitting diodes for the control electronics located on a printed circuit board. The problem was solved with special aluminum cooling elements.
A hinged stainless steel frame with a specially developed and patented rubber seal and retracted safety glass ensures the necessary water jet protection of the luminaire (IP66).
After a long development and testing phase, which was associated with high costs, the series maturity was confirmed. Passed international tests of various country institutes cleared the way for the market launch of LED tunnel lights in Germany and other European countries with the following advantages over conventional (HID) tunnel lights:
a) long life
b) energy saving with needs-based lighting control
c) quality of light (high color rendering)
d) uniformity, (high longitudinal and overall uniformity due to optimized lighting technology)
