About us
In 1985, Kai Ortlieb began his training as a bookbinder in Heidelberg in the department of single and special production. After graduating successfully in 1988, he gained five years of professional experience in various companies. He gained insights into art bookbinding, book restoration, industrial bookbinding and library and assortment bookbinding. Most recently, he headed the Heidelberg branch of a well-known manual bindery.
This was followed in 1993 by a visit to the master school in Stuttgart and its completion in 1994 as the best student.
In December 1994, the bookbindery Kai Ortlieb was founded as a new foundation from the baptism.
Since then, the master workshop has steadily expanded its individual diversity. In addition to the production of books, brochures, anthologies and folders include individual cassettes, boxes and slipcase, the drawing of maps, repairs and restorations, the production of passepartouts and picture frames and much more to the tasks. But even small series and gastronomy cards are made regularly.
Through this multi-track knowledge is not reduced to machine knowledge, but expanded to this.
We still master the old techniques of bookbinding and designing.
We know about the peculiarities of paper, board and paperboard grades and the new recycling products. We are familiar with the classic materials such as linen, leather, parchment and understand how to make them three-dimensional.
But also on plastics, foils and metals, traditional design techniques can be transferred and new ones developed.
Incidentally, we produce personal items as well as small editions up to 500 copies. Our clients are private clients as well as law firms, companies from trade and industry as well as the public sector. They all value our creative craft, which creates unique and appealing products with inspiration, style and individuality.
In short: the bookbindery Kai Ortlieb can do much more than “just” bind books.
