For fine machining we differentiate between the machining processes profile grinding and generating grinding:

Generating grinding
In continuous generating grinding, due to the constant, synchronized to the tooth number ratio, rotation of the workpiece and helical tool all tooth gaps of the workpiece during a feed movement are processed simultaneously. This avoids losses of time that arise during profile grinding through the intake and overflow paths and the redistribution. It is therefore a highly productive and cost-effective method of gear grinding for small and medium gears. Both dressable ceramic tools and non-dress CBN tools (in cylinder or globoid design) can be used.

In discontinuous profile grinding, the tooth flank gap for gap are machined one after the other with single or multi-groove profiled tools. The process offers a very high degree of flexibility with regard to the producible workpiece geometry and meets the highest demands on profile accuracy. In gear grinding it is mostly used in small series sizes and in prototype machining. The use of dressable ceramic tools and non-dress CBN tools is possible.
