ELECTRIC FLIGHT COMPETENCES OF SFL GMBH
In the years 1994 to 1996, the icaré 2 solar aircraft was developed at the University of Stuttgart, Institute for Aircraft Construction (IFB), with the significant contribution of our company founder Prof. Rudolf Voit-Nitschmann (project management and chief designer) and today’s SFL managing director Dipl.-Ing Werner Scholz (Deputy Project Management, Production Management and Flight Testing). Our know-how in the field of electric flight goes back to a time when nobody was talking about e-flight. In 1996, icaré 2 won the city of Ulm’s Berblinger Prize, worth DM 100,000, for a solar aircraft suitable for everyday use. Six FAI world records were flown with icaré 2 by the well-known record glider pilot Klaus Ohlmann. The solar aircraft icaré 2 is still operated today at the Bartholomä glider airfield.

Further electric flight projects followed: In 2007, a team led by Prof. Voit-Nitschmann again won the Berblinger Prize with the project proposal Hydrogenius, a two-seater fuel cell aircraft. This project was eventually realized as a battery-powered aircraft and renamed e-Genius. The development of e-Genius took place with the significant participation of SFL GmbH (drive train, avionics and electronics). The e-Genius won the Lindbergh Electric Aircraft Prize in 2011, 2nd place in the NASA Green Flight Challenge and the Green Speed ​​Cup in Berlin in 2013. e-Genius is the most powerful two-seater touring aircraft in the world today.
