History of the company:
The company was created due to the departure of two shareholders from the chemical-pharmaceutical factory Heyl & Co. in Berlin. From the chemical-pharmaceutical factory Heyl & Co., the land and buildings in Hildesheim, as well as some employees were taken over.
Initially, pharmaceuticals were manufactured for export to Africa and a product was developed for dentistry. In addition, Durognost® was produced, a layman’s easy-to-use utensil for determining water hardness. This product is still almost unchanged in the product range with considerable sales figures.
Since the industry was very much interested in water hardness at that time, a liquid, durable indicator was developed for the Durognost® cutlery and patented. In cooperation with the Otto Otto company in Hildesheim, the first Testomat® devices have been developed that automatically monitor the water hardness with the aid of the indicator. This range of Testomat® devices, including the indicators, has evolved over time and continues to be the mainstay of the company.
In order to accelerate the sale of the Testomat® devices, in 1960 the Cologne-based company GAWA was commissioned with the distribution, through which a considerable increase in sales could be achieved.
At that time, cooperation with the Phillips-Duphar company in the pharmaceutical sector began. Numerous drugs have been produced, especially in the veterinary sector. This eventually led to the establishment of a joint company Chemo-Heyl. As a result, Gebr. Heyl KG, now very small, has once again concentrated entirely on the water analysis sector.
In 1967 it was decided to take over the distribution of the Testomat® devices again in own direction. GAWA had already been successful in the valve sector.
At that time, 1/3 of GAWA was taken over. The other shares held two other shareholders.
Gebr. Heyl KG was now almost exclusively active in the sector of “industrial water treatment”. The Testomat® device has attracted worldwide interest and has been partnered with distributors in many countries. Today Gebr. Heyl has its own sales organization in France as well as distribution partners in different countries.
